Tower of Winds, Athens

"Richard Chandler's visit in 1765 set the scene well...He opened up several themes that became commonplaces of description. One was the conversion of the Tower of the Winds in the Plaka (the combined water clock and sundial of Andronikos Kyrristos) to a Tekke, or place of worship belonging to an order of dervishes. Chandler attended a religious function there, an event which ended with the dervishes' wonderful dance. This was followed by entertainment to pipes and coffee. It was a feature of the traveller's round."

Michael Llewellyn Smith, "Athens", 2004.
